국제회의는 광범위한 문제나
특정문제에 대한 일반토의를 위한
토론장으로서의 역할 및 조약문 또는
기타 정식 국제문서 작성이나 채택, 국제적 정보교환,
국제적 사업에 대한 자발적 분담금 서약 등의 목적으로 이루어지고 있다.
이러한 국제회의의 종류는
국가나 국제기구별로 다르게 분류하고 있으며
회의형태나 주최, 목적, 성격 등 다양한 방법으로 구분할 수 있으나
가장 많이 사용되고 있는 회의형태별 분류 방법인
Meeting, Convention, Conference, Forum,
Symposium, Panel Discussion, Seminar,
Workshop 및 Exhibition과
주최에 따른 분류 방법인 Association Meetings와
Corporate Meetings를 중심으로 설명하고자 한다.
1. 회의형태별 분류
1) Meeting
모든 종류의 회의를 통칭하는 가장 포괄적인 용어로서
정보와 지식을 교환하기 위한 모임을 말한다.
2) Convention
Convention은 과거 연차총회의 의미로 사용되었으나
최근에는 그 개념이 모든 회의를 포괄하는 의미로 사용되고 있어
회의분야에서 Conference와 함께 가장 일반적으로 사용하고 있는 용어이다.
Convention은 국제기구의 사업심의나 예산수립,
정보전달을 목적으로 개최되는 정기집회를 의미하고
전시회를 수반하는 경우가 많아 다소 상업성향을 띠고 있다.
Convention은 통상적으로 Conference에 비해 다수의 주제를 다루는 경우가 많다.
3) Conference
Conference는 Convention과 의미가 거의 유사하게 쓰이고 있다. Conference는 주로 학술적 측면이나 첨단과학,
기술 등 새로운 지식에 대한 정보 전달이나
특정문제에 대한 연구를 목적으로 이루어지는 경우가 많고
때로는 국제집회 또는 국제기구의 정기집회 등의 의미로 사용된다.
그리고 Conference는 통상적으로 Convention에 비해
회의 진행상 토론회가 많이 열리고 회의 참가자들에게
토론 참여 기회가 많이 주어지는 경향이 있다.
4) Forum 한가지 주제에 대해 전문가들이
사회자의 주도하에 청중 앞에서 벌이는 공개토론회로서
청중도 자유롭게 의견을 개진할 수 있으며
사회자가 의견을 종합하는 회의를 말한다.
5) Symposium
제시된 안건에 대해 전문가들이
청중 앞에서 벌이는 공개토론회로서
Forum에 비해 다소의 형식을 갖추어
진행되므로 청중의 질의기회가 적다.
6) Panel Discussion
청중이 모인 가운데 2～8명의 연사가
사회자의 주도하에 각 분야의 발표자가
전문적인 견해를 발표하는 공개토론회로서
청중도 의견을 발표할 수 있으며 Panelist와 청중간에
자유로운 토의도 가능하나 발표자의 비중이 높아
청중의 발표 기회가 다소 제한적이다.
7) Seminar
주로 교육 및 연구 목적을 띤 회의로서
단일 논제에 대하여 30명 이하의 참가자가
전문가적인 견해를 발표하고 토론한다.
8) Workshop
대규모회의의 일부 또는 단독적으로 이루어지며
대부분 30명 내외의 참가자가 특정문제나 과제에 대하여
새로운 지식이나 정보 등을 교환하는 회의로서
훈련 또는 교육의 목적으로 개최된다.
9) Exhibition/Trade Show
회의와는 다소 거리감이 있으며 Vendor에 의해 제공된 상품과
서비스의 전시모임을 말하며 불특정 다수가 참가하고
전시회나 박람회가 개최될 때 이들 분야와
관련된 회의가 개최되거나 반대로 대규모 회의와 병행하여
관련분야 전시회가 개최되는 경우가 많다.
이렇듯 국제회의의 부속행사로 열리는 경우에는 Exhibition이라고 부르며
전시회 단독으로 개최되는 경우는 Trade Show라고 한다.
10) Exposition
BIE(Bureau International des Exposition)에 의하면
Exposition이란 일반대중의 교육과 계몽을 목적으로 하고
인류노력에 의해 한 시대가 달성한 성과를 확인하고
미래를 전망하는 무대라고 정의되고 있어
Exhibition이나 Trade Show와는 다르지만 혼용되어
사용되기도 하고 있으며 통상 EXPO 또는 박람회라고 부른다.
2. 회의주최별 분류
국제회의를 주최별로 분류하면 협회회의(Association Meetings)와
기업회의(Corporate Meetings)로 나눈다.
협회회의는 International Governmental Organizations Meeting과
International Non-Governmental Organizations Meeting으로 구분하며,
협회회의는 회의주최에 따라 International Governmental Organizations Meeting과
International Non-Governmental Organizations Meeting으로 나눌 수 있으나
정부간에 개최되는 공식회의가 차지하는 비중이 적어
이를 제외하면 대부분이 협회 또는 국제기구 등이 개최하는 비정부조직회의이다.
따라서 협회회의는 정부간 공식회의를 제외하면
학술이나 산업 등의 정보전달을 위해 개최되는 회의이다. 그리고 협회회의는 각각 전문분야별로 협회를 구성하고 있고,
정기적으로 1년 또는 격년을 주기로 회의를 개최하고 있으며,
개최지를 매번 다르게 순회하면서 개최한다.
협회회의의 회의기간은 보통 4일내지 5일이지만
때로는 2일 또는 3일 심지어 6일 이상이 되는 경우도 있다. 회의장소를 선정하는 경우
통상적으로 400명 이하의 회의는 한 장소에서 모두 이루어지는 것이 편하고,
400명 이상의 회의는 주로 전문 회의장(Congress center)에서 개최하는 것이 바람직하다.
그리고 모든 협회회의의 약 15%는 동시통역을 사용하고 있지만
기업회의는 동시통역이 드물게 이용된다.
2) 기업회의(Corporate Meetings)
기업회의는 기업의 임직원들을 대상으로
판매나 기술 훈련, 동기유발 등의 목적으로 하는 내부회의(Internal Meetings)와
기업과 관련된 외부인사를 대상으로 하는 신제품 설명회,
주주총회, 기자회견, 전시회 등의 외부회의(External meetings),
그리고 기업의 임직원 및 기업과 관련된 외부인사를 목적으로 하는
워크숍과 교육 등의 내외부합동회의(Meetings which are both internally and externally geared) 등
3가지로 나눌 수 있다.
이들 회의는 주로 당면과제가 발생하면 개최되며 협회회의에 비해 같은 장소에서 많이 개최된다.

1. Classification by Conference Type 1) Meeting It is the most comprehensive term that refers to all types of conferences, and refers to a gathering for exchanging information and knowledge.
2) Convention Convention was used in the past to mean an annual general meeting, but recently, the concept has been used to encompass all conferences, and is the most commonly used term along with Conference in the conference field. 5) Symposium A public discussion held in front of an audience by experts on a proposed agenda, where it is conducted in a somewhat more formal manner than a forum, so there are fewer opportunities for the audience to ask questions.
6) Panel Discussion A public discussion where 2 to 8 speakers from each field present their professional opinions under the leadership of a moderator in front of an audience. The audience can also present their opinions, and free discussion between panelists and the audience is possible, but the presentation opportunities for the audience are somewhat limited due to the high proportion of presenters.
7) Seminar A meeting mainly for educational and research purposes, where 30 or fewer participants present and discuss their professional opinions on a single topic.
8) Workshop A meeting held as part of or independently of a large-scale meeting, where most participants exchange new knowledge or information on a specific issue or task, and held for the purpose of training or education.
9) Exhibition/Trade Show
It is somewhat different from a meeting, and refers to a show of products and services provided by vendors. It is often held when an unspecified number of people participate and an exhibition or fair is held, and a meeting related to these fields is held, or conversely, an exhibition of a related field is held in parallel with a large-scale meeting. When it is held as an event attached to an international conference, it is called an Exhibition, and when it is held as an exhibition alone, it is called a Trade Show. 10) Exposition According to the Bureau International des Exposition (BIE), an Exposition is defined as a stage for the education and enlightenment of the general public, confirming the achievements of an era through human efforts, and looking forward to the future. It is different from Exhibition or Trade Show, but they are sometimes used interchangeably and are usually called EXPO or Fair.
2. Classification by Conference Host
International conferences are classified by host, and are divided into Association Meetings and Corporate Meetings. Association Meetings are divided into International Governmental Organizations Meetings and International Non-Governmental Organizations Meetings, and Corporate Meetings are divided into Internal Meetings, External Meetings, and In/External Meetings.
1) Association Meetings Association meetings can be divided into International Governmental Organizations Meetings and International Non-Governmental Organizations Meetings depending on the meeting host, but since official meetings held between governments account for a small proportion, most of them are non-governmental organization meetings held by associations or international organizations. Therefore, except for official meetings between governments, association meetings are meetings held to convey information on academics or industries. In addition, association meetings are organized by each specialized field, and meetings are held regularly once a year or every other year, and the meeting location is changed each time.
